A natural plant product made from the bark of the European coastal pine (Pinus maritima). Pycnogenol® pine bark extract is a concentrate of a special class of bioflavonoids called proanthocyanidins. Pycnogenol® is standardized to yield 42.5 mg (85%) proanthocyanidins in a 50 mg capsule.

Raffaella Canali; Raffaella Comitato; Frank Schonlau; and Fabio Virgili investigated the effects of Pycnogenol supplementation on the arachidonic acid pathway in human polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) in response to an inflammatory stimulus.

Pycnogenol supplementation reduced leukotriene production but did not leave prostaglandins unaltered, which we attribute to a decline of COX-2 activity in favor of COX-1.

The researchers show for the first time that Pycnogenol supplementation simultaneously inhibits COX-2 and 5-LOX gene expression and reduces leukotriene biosynthesis in human PMNL upon pro-inflammatory stimulation ex vivo.

The anti-inflammatory pharmacology of Pycnogenol in humans involves COX-2 and 5-LOX mRNA expression in leukocytes.

COX-2 inhibitors are commonly used to treat pain

COX-2 is an inducible enzyme that promotes inflammation, pain, and fever.

Other ingredients: maltodextrin, gelatin, cellulose, water, vegetable stearate, silicon dioxide.

As a dietary supplement, take 2 capsules with breakfast and 2 capsules with lunch for two weeks. Then take 2 capsules daily with breakfast.
